ABOUT THE EVENT:
On May 7th, join Chris Mackowski for a presentation on the Battle of Spotsylvania Courthouse, a conflict that reached a gruesome peak at the “Bloody Angle.” For twenty-two grueling hours, Federal and Confederate forces engaged in the war’s most intense sustained hand-to-hand combat amidst torrential rain and knee-deep mud. Described by those who survived it as a “Saturnalia of blood,” the struggle came to represent the absolute limit of human endurance and physical savagery. This event explores the harrowing details of a battle so brutal it earned haunting nicknames like “Hell’s Half-Acre” and the “slaughter pen of Spotsylvania.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER:
Chris Mackowski has authored or coauthored nearly two dozen books and serves as a Copie Hill Civil War Fellow at the American Battlefield Trust. He holds various leadership and advisory roles within the historical community, including positions with the Civil War Roundtable Congress and the Antietam Institute.
